A Covington County grand jury has indicted the Andalusia mother accused of breaking her 1-year-old daughter’s arm in three places, dragging her up a flight of stairs and locking her in a bedroom so she and her boyfriend could allegedly “eat lunch without hearing the crying.” Tiffany Ann Riley, 21, and Jermaine Pate were arrested in July following the incident at a local apartment complex. Reports indicate the two had a history of domestic violence – Pate was on probation for a domestic violence charge, and according to witness statements, the two had verbally abused and repeatedly spanked the child for crying.

Male vs Female Abuse Stats

Do you believe that women are “more likely” than men to abuse children? That’s incorrect. According to the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect there are more incidents of abuse of children (including both physical abuse and neglect) perpetrated by women than by men. But that does not tell you the “likelihood” that you are looking for, which is the percent of women caregivers who commit child abuse versus the percent of men caregivers who commit child abuse. More women than men care for children, and more children are cared for by women than are cared for by men. So if the “statistic” you are looking for is not raw numbers of incidents (which merely would be the “likelihood” that any given incident of abuse has been perpetrated by a man or a woman), and if you came to this page because what you really want to know is whether women or men are more likely to be dangerous when they are caring for children, whether it is women or men who are “more likely” to abuse children, then you need to do some math. The raw numbers of incidents by themselves don’t tell you this.

Child Sexual Abuse Trauma

Posted by Sandra On January - 17 - 2011 ADD COMMENTS

Child sexual abuse has been reported up to 80,000 times a year, but the number of unreported instances is far greater, because the children are afraid to tell anyone what has happened, and the legal procedure for validating an episode is difficult. The problem should be identified, the abuse stopped, and the child should receive professional help. The long-term emotional and psychological damage can be devastating.

Child sexual abuse can take place within the family, by a parent, step-parent, sibling or other relative; or outside the home, for example, by a friend, neighbor, child care person, teacher or random molester. However, when the sexual abuse has occurred, the child develops a variety of distressing feelings and thoughts. No child is psychologically prepared to cope with repeated sexual stimulation. Even a two or three year old, who cannot know the sexual activity is “wrong,” will develop problems resulting from the inability to cope with the over stimulation.
