But over the course of two months, shock has turned into frustration as the case has taken bizarre twists. Suspicion rests on the boy’s stepmother, who is mute about what happened the morning the child disappeared, while lurid tales of infidelity and even a murder-for-hire plot swirl.

John Joseph Merzbacher, a notorious Baltimore child abuser accused of molesting dozens of students at the Catholic school where he taught, could soon be released from a life sentence, under a federal court order handed down Friday.

Merzbacher, now 68, is a former middle school teacher at the city’s Catholic Community School. He was sentenced in 1995 to multiple life terms after a jury found him guilty of raping a preteen Elizabeth Ann Murphy decades earlier. He has already served 15 years.

A 2-year-old Lake City girl who was found Tuesday unresponsive in a bathtub has died, and her caretaker has been charged with child abuse, Lake City police reported Friday.  Two others have been charged with child neglect, police said. Officer Steve Shaw said the investigation is continuing and additional charges could be filed.

NEWKIRK — The mother of Kelsey Smith-Briggs will be back in court Sept. 1 for a fact-finding hearing on the “strong possibility” of juror misconduct during her 2007 trial.

Kay County District Judge D.W. Boyd is holding the hearing to gather evidence for the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals.

Dr. Olga Rosa’s job can make her heart ache with anguish or burst with joy — often on the same day, sometimes simultaneously.

The coordinator of South Carolina’s statewide forensic pediatrics program, Rosa diagnoses hard-to-recognize child abuse and trains others on the intricacies of detecting abuse. She’s one of 180 nationwide in the first class of physicians certified in child abuse pediatrics, a subspecialty recently approved by the American Board of Pediatrics.

WINNIPEG — A Manitoba man convicted of first degree murder in one of the nation’s most shocking recent cases of child abuse is expected to appeal his conviction to the Supreme Court.

In 2008, Karl McKay and Samantha Kematch were convicted of first degree murder in the gruesome 2005 death of Kematch’s daughter, five-year-old Phoenix Sinclair, a murder that highlighted failures in the province’s child welfare system.

(Edinburg, TX)  —  A south Texas man convicted of killing and beheading three young children has been sentenced to death. A Hidalgo County jury sentenced 29-year-old John Rubio Thursday afternoon after deliberating for a few hours.
Rubio told the jurors quote, “I’m sorry it had to come to this,” and the judge later told him that if he wanted forgiveness, it would have to come from a higher source.

After determining that former state Bar Association Treasurer Aaron Biber acted with particular cruelty in grooming and raping a 15-year-old boy, a judge on Thursday jailed Biber without bail pending his sentencing in October.

If Hennepin County District Judge Lloyd Zimmerman’s extensive courtroom comments are an indication, Biber, 47, will be looking at a long prison sentence for his guilty plea last week to first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Child rape suspect Daniel J. Drury’s time on the run is over.

Police have charged the Nanticoke man with raping an 11-year-old girl at a Pine Street home in October 2002. Drury was recently captured in Florida, where he fled two years ago after the girl levied the allegations against him, police said. The 45-year-old is charged with rape, aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault and corruption of minors.
