BUFFALO, N.Y. — A 101-year-old pedophile who was New York’s oldest state prison inmate has died. Corrections officials say Theodore Sypnier of Buffalo died of natural causes at 12:23 a.m. Tuesday. The Buffalo News reports Sypnier was taken to the Coxsackie Correctional Facility’s regional medical unit when his health began to fail last week. He’d been housed at Groveland Correctional Facility. Authorities say Sypnier molested children as young as 4 years old for decades in Buffalo and later in the Town of Tonawanda. He was released from prison in 2008 after serving time on a 1999 conviction for molesting two young sisters but was returned in April after violating his parole by skipping sex offender classes.

1. Prevalence
Child abuse remains prevalent, even today. The question remains: how prevalent? The social stigma around child abuse means that it gets swept under the carpet time and again. We know how many cases of abuse are being reported and how many cases are substantiated each year. However, it is impossible to know how many children are being abused every day but are too afraid to say anything. In response to the growing awareness around child abuse, several laws have been set in place to protect children from further abuse. In every state in Australia mandatory reporting laws have been introduced (Higgins, Bromfield, & Richardson, 2007). These laws mandate that professionals who work with children are legally obliged to make a report about any child they suspect is in danger of abuse. These laws differ state-by-state, but are in place Australia-wide in some form. In spite of mandatory reporting laws, statistics suggest that child abuse remains prevalent.

Accused killer Renee King on Tuesday begged a magistrate to be allowed to attend the funeral service scheduled today for the 2-year-old stepdaughter she is accused of sexually assaulting and beating to death. “I swear to God on my life I didn’t do this,” a sobbing King said. “I just want to be able to see my husband and my kids and be with them through this hard time (today) for my stepdaughter’s burial. I’m accused of doing something I never would have done.”

Instead, 42nd District Court Magistrate Joseph Plawecki ordered the 28-year-old woman to be held in the Macomb County Jail without bond at Tuesday’s arraignment proceedings. King is accused in the blunt force trauma homicide of her stepdaughter, Lily Furneaux-Wolfenbarger, whose body was found unresponsive Saturday afternoon in the New Haven home King shares with her husband, Lily’s father.

BEDFORD, Pa. — An evangelist has been ordered to stand trial on charges he raped an 11-year-old girl while in Bedford County for a revival meeting.The Rev. Walter Donald Bradshaw, 61, of Lexington, N.C., has pleaded not guilty to charges including rape of a child and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse. Bradshaw was arrested last month after the girl reported the incident to an adult. The girl’s 51-year-old mother, who is from Bedford County, was also ordered to stand trial after Wednesday’s preliminary hearing and remains jailed.The mother was charged with sexual exploitation of children, unlawful contact with a minor, endangering the welfare of children, criminal solicitation to commit perjury and corruption of minors.

Trafficked Teen Girls Describe Life In ‘The Game’

Last month, the FBI announced the results of Operation Cross Country V, a 40-city investigation that led to the rescue of 69 children who were being victimized through prostitution. More than 800 people, including 99 pimps, were arrested. According to the FBI, more than 100,000 children are sold for sex in the U.S. each year. In a two-part series, Youth Radio takes a look at the problem of child prostitution in the U.S. Today, two young women who recently escaped what’s called “the game” share their stories.

“I’d wake up at 5; I’d be outside by 5:30,” says Brittney, 19. “I would just wait and see what happened, whether it’d be in the streets or whether I’d be on the Internet. And then I won’t be able to come back inside until like 2 o’clock in the morning, so I’d get only, like, three hours of rest.” Brittney, a former sex worker, agreed to share her story under the condition that her real name not be used. She’s a native of Oakland, Calif., and only recently out of what’s called “the game.” Less than a year ago, Brittney was being forced to work as a prostitute on the Internet and on the streets of Oakland.

Asked to investigate the roots of child abuse, a group of social engineers focused not on its causes but its prevention.

No one wants to be anywhere near the phrase “child abuse.” Parents flee from programs that would tar them as “high risk.” Teachers and child care providers fear the mistrust that comes with any hint they might call Child Protective Services. Those services don’t receive children until it’s too late to prevent abuse. And the public numbs to PSAs with warnings like, “Every 10 seconds, another child is abused in America …” (which is, unfortunately, about right).

“What they hear is, ‘It’s so bad, there’s nothing you can do about it, and we should just put those bad parents in jail,’” said Judy Langford, who directs the child abuse and neglect prevention program with the Center for the Study of Social Policy. “When you work with families, it’s so depressing when you look at everything in that way.”

The man charged with sexually abusing a child earlier this year in Naperville is an adjunct professor at a community college and, reportedly, a minister. James W. French, 63, of upstate Dakota, remained Tuesday in DuPage County Jail in Wheaton on a $250,000 bond. He faces trial on a felony charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Naperville police on Thursday arrested French at his home and seized what Sgt. Gregg Bell characterized as “pertinent evidence to the investigation.” Police on Nov. 16 began looking into French’s activities after being contacted by officials of the DuPage County Children’s Advocacy Center, which investigates molestation allegations involving children.

Children’s Hospital Seeing Surge In Child Abuse Cases
Out Of 6 Infants Brought To Hospital Last Week Of November, 2 Died

T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital officials said Tuesday they are seeing an upsurge in child abuse case. The last week of November, there were six infants brought to Children’s Hospital suffering from non-accidental traumatic head and bone injuries. Two of those infants died.  Marisa Moyer of Erlanger’s Safe and Sound program, said, “It’s been awful. I came in one day and saw Dr. (Karla) Garcia with her head in her hands.” Dr. Garcia said the non-accidental traumatic head injuries (shaking a baby fiercely) “is 100 percent preventable.” She and Dr. Annie Church said a combination of the down economy and the holidays may be bringing on the high number of injured infants.

A 26-year-old Coeur d’Alene woman was arrested Sunday on two counts of felony injury to a child after police found her two children living in filthy, unhealthy conditions in Coeur d’Alene.Sgt. Christie Wood of the Coeur d’Alene Police Department told Hagadone News Network, “The conditions have never been this severe.” Police found Elizabeth C. Crossley’s twin 2-year-old girls living in an apartment with a large number of cats and two dogs, and garbage and clutter strewn about, including dirty diapers. Fecal matter was smeared on walls. Urine and feces soaked in and covered the carpet, and the smell of human waste was overpowering to investigators, she said. The stuffed toys the girls clutched also were smeared in feces. Rotten food was in the kitchen, on the stove and counters at the apartment at 1201 N. Lincoln Way, Wood said. “They had bruising on various parts of their bodies and open sores,” she said. “Both girls had dried fecal matter caked on their head, arms, legs, hands, and feet.”

LAPLACE, LA – Sad story being reported out of Louisiana where a 15-year-old girl was found beaten to death in her bedroom. Her mother works a third shift job as a security guard and last spoke to her daughter, Taylor Adams, at around 9 p.m. that night. When she came home at around 6:30 a.m. she found her teen daughter dead and covered in blood inside her bedroom. Police say that death was from blunt force trauma to the head and that it happened sometime after 1 a.m. but are not giving out details as to how they arrived at that timeline. No clear motive is known for the attack as there was no sign of forced entry, no sign of robbery and no evidence that she had been sexually assaulted.

A 28-year-old New Jersey man has been arrested for allegedly distributing child pornography over the Internet to an undercover officer. Seth Dixon, of Brick, has since been charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and conspiracy to commit aggravated sexual assault. Dixon was apprehended after investigators say they learned he had distributed child pornography to a 52-year-old man named Walter Domanski Jr. and later reportedly arraigned the former Long Beach Island lifeguard into meeting a 6-year-old girl for sexual purposes.
