EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) – An Evansville child is hospitalized in Cincinnati after police say she sustained serious abuse.
Police were called to St. Mary’s when a 5-year-old girl was admitted that had signs of child abuse.

The 22-week infant died one day later in intensive care at a hospital in the mother’s home town of Rossano in southern Italy.
The mother, pregnant for the first time, had opted for an abortion after prenatal scans suggested that her baby was disabled.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A Roman Catholic priest in Brazil is facing charges he abused eight boys in cases dating back to 1995, prosecutors said Wednesday, adding to a growing list of allegations against clergy in Latin America.
Father Jose Afonso, 74, is accused of abusing altar boys between the ages of 12 and 16, Sao Paulo state prosecutors said in an e-mailed statement.

Erin Flynn said she and Patrick Hall had just finished snorting lines of heroin, with a 5-month-old boy nearby, when she stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. RACINE COUNTY – An employee of the Human Services Department has been fired and is under criminal investigation for allegedly filing false reports on child abuse cases he never investigated.
Todd O’Brien, a child protective services initial assessment worker with HSD who investigated complaints of child abuse and neglect, was terminated Tuesday, said Racine County Human Services Director Debra Jossart.

MODESTO, CA – The detective handling the case of a 10-year-old Modesto girl who was allegedly abused at the hands of her step-mother and father says the child is doing much better.
Det. Marta Delgado said the girl and her siblings were removed from the home of Steven Michael Andrews, 28, and Jessica Nicole Leyva, 23, during of the course of the investigation which began April 4. That is when Modesto police were called to the residence to investigate a report of child abuse.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Authorities in Spartanburg County said they arrested an Upstate mother on charges of child abuse and neglect.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said 29-year-old Patricia Diane Emory, of Converse, was arrested Monday after an investigation by the Juvenile Crimes Unit determined that Emory’s 7-month-old daughter had suffered two fractures in her right leg.

More than two million images of child sex abuse had been circulated by 100 offenders who went on to be convicted in the last 20 months, the NSPCC says.
In a sample created by analysing media reports of court cases, the charity found that nearly 50,000 of the photographs were in the worst category.

A woman and her boyfriend have been charged with murder in the death earlier this year of the woman’s 17-month-old daughter.
Lillian Kathryn Callender, 22, and Michael Christopher Stoffa, 25, are each charged with one count of murder in the course of child abuse and two felony counts of child abuse. They are charged in the March death of Callender’s daughter, whose name has not been released to the media.
