LOS ANGELES — A newborn baby was turned over to an L.A. fire station on Christmas Eve under California’s Safe Haven Law which allows a parent or legal guardian to hand over a baby rather than abandon the child. L.A. Fire officials say on Friday afternoon a woman, whose identity is being kept confidential, brought a newborn baby girl to the Exposition Park fire station on South Hoover Street. Fire crews helped the woman, and took in the child who was healthy and well fed.

In February 2008, 7-week-old Caitlynne Bohlen of Grand Island died from suffocation after her mother’s boyfriend reportedly placed a pacifier in her mouth, wrapped a blanket around her head and used a pillow to squeeze her against the side of her crib. Twenty-three-year-old Christopher Klein is serving five to seven years in the Nebraska State Penitentiary for manslaughter in her death.

In January 2008, a 28-year-old Omaha man was arrested in the death of his son, 8-month-old Jaiden-Jackson Self. Marquale Self is serving 20 to 32 years for child abuse resulting in his death. Fifteen more times that year, Nebraska children died as the result of child abuse or neglect, ranking the state second behind Florida in the rate of child abuse deaths per 100,000 children.

In 2007 and 2008, Nebraska also ranked in the top three states for the rate of deaths of children from child abuse or neglect: 16 in 2007 and 17 in 2008.  The recently released 2009 rankings show Nebraska had improved to 18th in the country in the rate of deaths, not including the District of Columbia. Last year, the state recorded 10. Nationally, child abuse deaths have increased in recent years. In 2009, the official number reported by the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data Systems was 1,676. The National Coalition to End Child Abuse believes the number is higher, closer to 2,500 a year.

Kentucky Man Charged With Beating Girlfriend’s Son To Death

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – I don’t know which pisses me off more. Child abusers, or the women who allowed it. Well, maybe not allowed it, but through their lack of common sense, attributed to it. Case in point, Johnny Juliot and his girlfriend, Tara Hack. They met through a friend and although they had not known each other long, Juliot was already abusive towards her. But this did not stop her from letting Juliot watch her son, 4-year-old Tony Hack, because she says he was never violent towards the boy. When she arrived home on one of these occasions, she was greeted with Juliot carrying her son limp in his arms, blood coming from his mouth. They both took Tony the hospital and while there, Juliot left. Doctors told Hack her son’s skull fractures and bruising had come from getting the crap beat out of him, calling it the worst case of child abuse they’d ever seen.

Police Searching For Suspect In Videotaped Rape Of 12-Year-Old Girl

CLIFTON, N.J. — Police are searching for a New Jersey man after police say he raped a 12-year-old girl he met online while another man videotaped the assault. Police say that 20-year-old Leonardo Quintero met the girl on AOL Instant Messenger and had been chatting with her for a few weeks. On Dec 17, Quintero talked the girl into sneaking out of her house at around 2 a.m. where the girl thought they were just going to drive around the block. Instead Quintero took the girl to the home of 19-year-old Canpolat Cankurt. There the two men refused to take the girl home when she asked and took her into the basement instead where they had her drink alcohol. Afterwards Quintero raped the girl while Cankurt videotaped the assault with his cell phone.

President Obama signs Dodd’s bill to protect children and victims of domestic violence

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) released a statement after President Obama signed into law Dodd’s Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) reauthorization bill, which will strengthen federal efforts to identify, treat, and prevent the abuse and neglect of our nation’s children. This bill also reauthorizes the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA), which helps states prevent domestic violence and provides services to victims of domestic violence and their families.

“Today is a victory for the safety of our nation’s children and families. The number of children abused or neglected and individuals affected by domestic and dating violence is astounding and intolerable,” said Dodd. “We have an enormous responsibility to protect our most vulnerable citizens. With the signing of the CAPTA reauthorization bill, President Obama is ensuring that our states will have the resources to combat child abuse and neglect and that victims of violence and abuse will get the help they need. States will now be able to fund critical services that will provide a better life and future for all of our nation’s children and families.”

LOUISVILLE, KY – Gruesome child abuse cases have filled the headlines recently and investigators tell Fox 41, they are also being inundated with cases in Kentucky. “The child’s lower back, his legs, buttocks, privates, it’s pretty bad,” said Bullitt County Sheriff Detective Scotty McGaha. On Friday, Detective McGaha said a two-year-old had to be admitted to the hospital for multiple tests which revealed what doctors and investigators feared, another case of child abuse.  The same day, a 4-year-old Southern Indiana boy died from what investigators report as a severe beating. “There’s something in the center here that white,” said McGaha pointing to a picture of the child’s bruised leg. The Detective said the two-year-old’s abuser used some sort of object to beat the child from head to toe.  The person now charged with criminal abuse is the toddler’s mother, 20 year old Ashley Sneed.
