AKRON, Ohio — A jury found an Akron mother guilty of felonious assault after being charged with smacking a teen girl in the face with a baseball bat. Back in April, two teen girls got into an argument. One of the teens went home and told her mother, 38-year-old Shondra Bufford, about the altercation. So Bufford, her two daughters and Bufford’s sister all jumped into a car and drove to the home of the other teenager. Once they arrived, they all piled out with Bufford swinging a baseball bat inquiring who wanted to fight her daughter.

An alleged madam regularly picked up a 16-year-old girl from her high school and drove her to a basement brothel to work until 8 or 9 p.m. a couple of days a week, authorities charged Wednesday. Rubicela Montero forced the underage girls and other victims into prostitution and threatened them or their families with death if they quit, authorities said. One girl called an anonymous hotline and tipped off Chicago police about the brothel in a Little Village basement apartment. Police set up a sting operation, sending in an undercover officer to pose as a client willing to pay for sex. Montero advertised in a Spanish-language newspaper, authorities said.

BATAVIA – A pregnant Clermont County woman was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison in the death of her 2-year-old son, whom prosecutors said had been “tortured” on a daily basis. Krystle M. Hoskins, 24, had pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence in the death of Jerry Wells Jr. In imposing the maximum sentence allowed under Ohio law, Judge William Walker said it was the worst case of child abuse he had had presided over in his nearly 24 years in Common Pleas Court. Her husband, Timothy W. Hoskins, 42, who pleaded guilty to the June 1 murder of his stepson, was sentenced in October to life in prison. The boy died of asphyxiation, perhaps from being strangled.
