If you could see what I have seen

Posted by Sandra On August - 8 - 2010 1 COMMENT

scared child

When I started working at the center in December 2005, I never dreamed I’d see so much child abuse. I had no idea that child abuse happens every day in West Tennessee, even in the smallest of communities.

I never dreamed I’d see a little boy with a broken collarbone at the hands of his father or a teenager with scars from his father’s belt, scars so shocking that he hides them from his peers in gym class.

I never dreamed I’d see a little girl who has been victimized by so many of her mother’s boyfriends that law enforcement removed her from the home.

Court ruling may shrink Iowa’s child abuse registry

Posted by Sandra On August - 8 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

A database that schools, daycares, nursing homes and countless other organizations use to check the history of potential employees and volunteers could be cut in half by an Iowa Supreme Court ruling, officials say.

The child abuse registry has approximately 53,000 people with founded cases of child abuse filed against them, said Roger Munns, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of Human Services. Half of them are there because officials determined they did not adequately supervise children in their care.

Previous research has found that parents who were maltreated as children are more likely to abuse and neglect their own children, forming an intergenerational cycle of violence. Other studies have found low socioeconomic status to be a risk factor for the perpetration of child abuse and neglect. Dr. David Zielinski of NIH’s National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) suspected that, if childhood maltreatment affected socioeconomic well-being later in life, it might help explain this cycle. Childhood maltreatment is known to affect both physical and mental health in adulthood. According to a new study, the long-term impacts of child maltreatment also include higher rates of unemployment, poverty and use of social services.
