Violence Against Children

Posted by Sandra On February - 29 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

Domestic violence affects every member of the family, including the children. Family violence creates a home environment where children live in constant fear. Children who witness family violence are affected in ways similar to children who are physically abused.. They are often unable to establish nurturing bonds with either parent Children are at greater risk for abuse and neglect if they live in a violent home. Statistics show that over 3 million children witness violence in their home each year. Those who see and hear violence in the home suffer physically and emotionally.  READ MORE HERE

Police report details horrific abuse of 11 children taken from Texas home
  • Children taken into emergency custody after raid on January 24 aged between five months and 11 years
  • Shocking details from police report reveal eight children were tied up in single darkened room
  • One boy, aged 11, was covered in bruises, had a black eye and was missing a tooth
  • Child Protection Agency knew about living conditions back in 2005

Disturbing, fresh details about the squalor and abuse endured by 11 children in the Texas ‘house of horrors’ have emerged in a new police report. According to testimony given by two of the children rescued from what appeared to be a regular house in a non-descript street in suburban Dayton, the victims were bound down to dirty mattresses, forced to sleep in rooms with no air and no light, and routinely beaten. Nine of the 11 were between the ages of five months and six years. They were all being neglected and abused in the house where ten adults also lived, the report shows. Meanwhile, it also emerged today that Child Protection Services, which took the children into emergency custody after they were seized on January 24, knew about the sordid living conditions as early as 2005.  READ MORE HERE

Christine Paolilla was viciously bullied in high school over the outlandish wigs and messy drawn-on eyebrows she wore to hide the fact that she went bald as a young child.  When Tiffany Rowell and Rachael Koloroutis, two of the most popular girls at suburban Clear Lake High School outside Houston, Texas, befriended her, they made Paolilla into a new woman.  They taught her to dress and do her makeup. They helped her buy more attractive wigs. When they were done with her transformation, Paolilla was voted ‘Miss Irresistible’ by her class. READ MORE HERE

Project Unbreakable: Healing Sex Abuse Through Art

Posted by Sandra On February - 26 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

In October of last year, Grace Brown began a photography project called Project Unbreakable. Grace uses photography to help heal sexual abuse survivors by photographing them with posters that hold quotes from their attackers. Rape survivor and advocate for victims of sexual abuse, Yvonne Moss, describes the project as a way for victims to take the power back of the words that were once used against them.

Grace plans on photographing survivors for as long as she possibly can. Her goal is to spread light, awareness, and healing for those who have been affected.

If you are interested in participating by either being photographed or sending in your own image, you may send her an email at projectunbreakable@gmail.com with the subject line “Photograph Me” or “Submission”, depending on the circumstance.

Note: Grace, or anyone else associated with this project, is not qualified to give certified advice on this subject. If you are struggling, RAINN has a free, confidential, 24/7 sexual assault hotline: 1.800.656.HOPE(4673). RAINN also has an online hotline: https://ohl.rainn.org/online/
