Preventing child abuse today might curb crime tomorrow
Child abuse and neglect leaves its victims with lasting damage: In Louisiana 27 children are victimized every day, and their plight is reason enough to invest in prevention. But New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas, District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro and Sheriff Marlin Gusman offered another strong reason to protect at-risk children: doing so could prevent them from turning to crime as adults. The three are urging Gov. Bobby Jindal and state lawmakers to continue funding an abuse prevention program that provides visits by trained nurses to at-risk families and to seek new federal funding for those services.
