New `Underwear Rule’ to stop child sexual abuse

The Council of Europe has launched a new Underwear Rule campaign to help combat sexual violence against children and improve international cooperation on prosecuting offenders. The Underwear Rule, aimed at teaching children aged four to seven about their rights to set limits and speak out against abuse, is being promoted through a TV spot, a children’s book, poster campaigns and a website. The spot features a green cartoon child who gives permission to a large, brightly-coloured hand to pat him on the head and tickle him, but reacts angrily when the hand asks if it can touch him inside his underwear.

Study links joblessness to child abuse increase

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) – Statistics in South Carolina seem to support research showing parallels between rising unemployment and child abuse. The Greenville News reported Monday that Boston University researchers examining 18 years of data found that for every 1 percent increase in unemployment, child mistreatment reports one year later increased by at least .5 per 1,000 children. South Carolina’s Department of Social Services investigated nearly 19,000 cases over the last fiscal year, an increase of almost 7 percent. The number of proven cases rose nearly 3 percent to nearly 7,000.

Man Charged With Submerging Baby Upside Down Into Scalding Water

Rosemont, IL — Here’s a horrific case of child abuse that’ll knock your ass right out of the holiday spirit. A 33-year-old man is in jail on $200,000 bond after being charged with submerging his 17-month-old stepson’s face in scalding water, causing second-degree burns. After doing a bit of heroin and getting into an argument with his wife, police say Santiago R. Minjarez got aggravated at his stepson’s crying after the boy’s mother left the house. He admitted to holding the kid upside down by his legs, one of them still in a cast from a previous injury, and placing his head in the hot water running from a bathtub faucet.

Family speaks exclusively to KTLA, says Amanda Cooper had terminal disease.

HAWTHORNE ( KTLA) — The family of a 10 year old girl who died Saturday under mysterious circumstances spoke out Sunday to KTLA. Amanda Cooper’s aunt says the little girl was diagnosed with a terminal disease and had only a short time to live. The aunt, who wished to remain anonymous, said the family was stunned by allegations that Amanda may have been sexually abused. “If there’s anything, we want to know. That’s why we want to be left alone because we want the police to do their job. Of course we’re worried about that. Just the thought of it sickens me,” the aunt told KTLA.

Police: Missing Boys’ Dad Lied About Woman

Boys, Ages 9, 7, 5 Still Missing

MORENCI, Mich. — Police in Michigan said Monday they were questioning the validity of a father’s account of what happened to his three young sons. Police in Morenci, about 75 miles southwest of Detroit, are looking for 5-year-old Tanner, 7-year-old Alexander and 9-year-old Andrew Skelton. The boys were last seen the day before their father, John Skelton, tried to commit suicide. During a press conference, Police Chief Larry Weeks said John Skelton told them he gave the boys to a woman he met online and had been having an online relationship with. Skelton told police he asked the woman, Joann Taylor, to take the boys to their mother. But Weeks said investigators have failed to establish the reported relationship between John Skelton and Taylor, locate Taylor or find the van Taylor was reportedly driving.

Iran, Yemen and the plague of forced marriages: Millions of girls are made to become child brides.
Human rights violations in Iran were brought to light once again last week when a United Nations committee voted to censure the nation for widespread abuses, including what they deemed “pervasive gender inequality and violence against women.” Perhaps one of the most troubling and culturally ingrained of these abuses is the practice of child marriage – which not only plagues the Islamic Republic, but is all too common around the world. The humanitarian organization CARE estimates that “more than 60 million girls under the age of 18 are married, many to men twice their age or older.”
