INDIANA–Abuse and neglect killing more kids
“Stress could be a factor”
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – For one of the first times in more than five years, child deaths because of abuse and neglect are on the rise in Indiana.
According to the Department of Child Services, the number of kids killed either stayed near the same or declined from 2002-2007, but spiked in 2008.
Number of child fatalities caused by abuse and neglect in Indiana:
2002–69
2003–51
2004–57
2005–54
2006–53
2007–36
2008–46
That raised some eyebrows at the organization “Stop Child Abuse and Neglect.”
“That is larger than many classrooms,” said SCAN Communication Director Stephanie Jentgen. “It’s almost an entire school bus full of children.”
Four of the deaths happened in Allen County. With many folks around the Summit City feeling a pinch in their pocketbooks, officials said this can start to wear on new parents. “We know that stress is one of the leading causes of child abuse and neglect,” said Jentgen.
According to Jentgen, there are five main causes of child abuse and neglect resulting in death:
- Blunt force trauma
- Shaken baby syndrome
- Drowning
- Lack of parental supervision
- Vehicular problems (e.g.: not properly restraining a child)
