A Redondo Union High School graduate was arrested and potentially faces serious criminal charges for reportedly dumping her newborn infant in a trash can. The baby was later found dead by a trash collector last Wednesday.
Jessie Lauren Canfield, 24, who graduated in 2004, was arrested in Santa Barbara where she resided with her sister at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, hours after the 6-pound infant was found in the 700 block of North Irena Avenue. As of Friday, prosecutors have declined to file criminal charges until autopsy reports come back. An autopsy of the infant took place last Thursday, according to Lt. Joe Hoffman of the Redondo Beach Police Department.
“The coroner’s investigator said it’s going to take two to three weeks to get the full autopsy report … at which time hopefully we will obtain a cause of death and then that will kind of dictate what the next move will be on the part of the district attorney’s office,” he said.
