Pope’s former diocese reveals fresh child abuse claims
BERLIN: The pope’s former archdiocese in Germany said Wednesday it had passed to prosecutors more allegations of child sex abuse by a priest transferred there in 1980 with the future pontiff’s approval.
The archdiocese of Munich and Freising said the alleged abuse took place in 1998, meaning that unlike the huge number of other cases currently rocking the German Catholic Church, the priest could in theory still be charged.
“The case falls within the statute of limitations and the possible victims were minors at the time,” the diocese said in a statement. Prosecutors were not immediately available for comment.
The allegations follow talks between the alleged victim and Siegfried Kneissl, a cleric appointed by the archdiocese in southern Germany to investigate claims of abuse, the statement added.
