“I wouldn’t hurt my baby. I love him,” said Bland.
The 20 year-old Bland could barely keep it together in a jailhouse interview. She’s in the Madison County jail while her 3-month-old baby Jayden is in the hospital with serious injuries.
Doctors say the baby has a fractured skull, a blood clot on the side of his head and at one time had two broken legs, a broken arm and ankle.
“I don’t know how to explain it. I didn’t know. He didn’t cry,” argued bland.
But Bland told officers she woke up Monday morning after hearing a loud thud followed by loud cries. She found the baby’s father, 22-year-old Justin Sheets, wiping blood from Jayden’s mouth.
Anderson detectives say Bland and Sheets then carried Jayden a few blocks from their apartment to the hospital.
She also told police that Justin had a history of hurting their child.
“She kind of gave us some insight of Justin’s treatment to the child in the past,” said Mitch Carroll of the Anderson Police Department. “Everything from flicking [the child's] penis because he’s crying during a diaper change saying ‘i’m going to give him something to cry about.”
Bland denied blaming the father, saying detectives forced her to say Sheets was responsible for the abuse. She said she doesn’t know who hurt Jayden.
“I know it sounds crazy. It makes me feel terrible inside. It makes me not want to live knowing my baby had all that stuff wrong with him and I didn’t know.”
But when Bland was asked if she had ever seen Sheets do anything to the child, she responded “not to hurt him intentionally.”
Anderson police say they didn’t force Bland to point the finger at Sheets and they believe he is the one responsible for seriously hurting 3-month-old Jayden. A police report also stated that the father admitted to dropping the baby.
Detectives say the mother has a 16-month-old child who is now in the custody of child protective services.
Sheets declined to be interviewed.
