Wayne County–A 22-year-old mother who abandoned her baby in a Garden City dumpster to hide her pregnancy from her family is heading to court next week.
The Detroit Free Press reports Desiree Walker is scheduled for arraignment Dec. 21 on charges of attempted murder, child abandonment and second-degree child abuse.
Four teenage girls helped discover the baby last month in trash bin near Cherry Hill and Middlebelt. After hearing the cries, one of the girls contacted her father, who arrived to investigate.
Previous: Girls recount finding baby”When I went to move the one bag, I felt it and it moved,” Ron Smith told WXYZ. “And I was like “Oh, my God, there is something in here.’ And then that’s when we opened up the bag, and there it was. That’s when I freaked out.”
Smith found a 7-pound, 4-ounce newborn — umbilical cord still attached — in a plastic grocery bag and started yelling for someone in the neighboring collision shop to call 911.
Police also found a receipt in the bag, which they used to track down the mother.
Garden City Police Deputy Chief Robert Muery last month reminded the Detroit Free Press that Michigan has a law allowing mothers to leave their newborns at a hospital, police or fire station, no questions asked.
