Suburb in shock at deadly family attack
A 68-year-old grandfather and 37-year-old mother are dead and a four-year-old girl is in hospital with stab wounds to the neck after a suspected double murder in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs.
Police forced their way into the house on Clovelly Road in Randwick after neighbours heard screams just before 6pm last night, and found the bodies of former ABC employee Chloe Waterlow and her father, the gallery director Nick Waterlow.
So far detectives have refused to say how they died.
Ms Waterlow’s four-year-old daughter was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital – she is in a stable condition.
An eight-month-old baby was found outside the home and was taken to hospital for observation, but was unhurt.
The baby has now been placed in the care of the Department of Community Services (DoCS).
Residents of the quiet street say they are shocked at what has happened to the family, described as “very friendly”.
Neighbours have told reporters that the grandfather was heavily involved in looking after the children and was often seen with them.
Police forensics and sniffer dogs have spent the night on Clovelly Road looking for evidence, and are still at the scene.
So far no one has been arrested.
One neighbour John Drew told police that he saw a homeless man outside the family’s house.
“I mean it’s probably nothing but I mean it’s ironical that, you don’t get homeless people round here and the fact that he was sitting outside the house,’ he said.
Another neighbour, Sue Sharp, says she has heard reports the woman’s husband is on his way home from London.
“I have no idea what their situation is, we have seen the father walking past with the children, so I don’t know if they actually live together or not or what that situation is, but I’m sure he’s in a distraught state,” she said.
Tributes
Nick Waterlow was the director of the Ivan Dougherty Gallery at the College of Fine Arts (COFA) in Sydney.
A COFA blog post this morning describes him as a “much loved and respected member of staff” who will be greatly missed.
It says Mr Waterlow was a leading member of Australia’s arts community who curated three Sydney Biennales.
Chloe Waterlow worked at the ABC for several years before she resigned in 2007.
She was a marketing co-ordinator for radio and a publicist for television.
