Brad Boda, who is on unpaid leave from Rocky Mountain High School, appeared at the Boulder County jail Monday afternoon to hear the charges against him and to seek permission to have contact with his nieces and nephews. A judge denied the request.

After his Sept. 23 arrest, Longmont police said Boda sexually assaulted numerous young people, mostly boys, while he worked as a church youth counselor and at Longmont United Hospital. The assaults are alleged by police to have occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The charges filed by prosecutors Monday against Boda are:

> Sexual assault on a child – pattern of abuse

> Sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust (two counts)

> Sexual assault on a child (two counts)

> Sexual exploitation of children (three counts)

> Criminal attempt to commit sexual exploitation of children (two counts)

> Sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust – pattern of abuse

The court order says Boda must stay away from anyone younger than 18, and his attorney on Monday asked that Judge David Archuleta alter that restriction so Boda can explain to his minor relatives where their “favorite uncle has disappeared.” The parents of those nieces and nephews signed affidavits swearing they were comfortable with letting Boda be around their children in supervised settings.

Archuleta refused, saying the risk is too great. He said Boda appears to want to have contact with his nieces and nephews solely to maintain a family relationship and not for childcare or other, more concrete, purposes.

Prosecutor Adrian Van Nice argued many convicted sex offenders ultimately confess to molesting family members once they are imprisoned and undergoing therapy. She said there’s “no reason” for Boda to have contact with his young relatives.
